BRAZIL'S SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: A PATHWAY TO SDG 2 - ZERO HUNGER

Cristina M Quintella, Wagna Piler Carvalho dos Santos, Edilson Araujo Pires

Resumo

Brazil's presence on the FAO's Hunger Map, which it had exited in 2014, obstructs the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and other SDGs like SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). Fruits and vegetables play a pivotal role in attaining SDG 2 in Brazil due to their nutrient quality, enhancing food security. The country's vast biodiversity and diverse climates offer significant opportunities. A study spanning 2000 to 2019 assessed Brazil's food science and technology landscape, focusing on three technology readiness levels (TRL): TRL3 (Scopus indexed articles), TRL4 (academic patents), and TRL5 (non-academic patents). A total of 6,894 articles and 128 patent families were analyzed. Academic institutions, particularly the University Federal de Campina Grande (UFCG) and University Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), dominate patent applications. EMBRAPA excels in article production but lags in patent filings. The majority of Brazilian patents are confined to the domestic market, with limited interest in exporting, mainly to the USA and Argentina. Brazil's technology sector exhibits consistent growth, holding potential to benefit the domestic and global markets. Concentrated efforts in specific regions are present, and fostering collaboration between academic institutions and the private sector could be a strategic catalyst for further innovation. Patents account for only 1.85% of academic publications, emphasizing untapped potential in this arena.
